The Silent Witness National Initiative is a program aimed to increase awareness of domestic violence and end homicides that result from domestic violence. The program currently operates in all 50 states and 20 countries around the world.

The original Silent Witness was formed in Minnesota in 1990 in response to the growing number of murders due to domestic violence. A group of 27 life-sized, red silhouettes were constructed as an exhibit to demonstrate the loss of 26 women in the state in 1990 due to domestic violence, with one added to encompass those victims whose deaths are left unsolved or were incorrectly ruled accidental.

If you are in Mecklenburg County and wish to reserve Silent Witness display for your organization, contact Michael Sexton at the Mecklenburg County Women’s Commission at 704.432.1568 or visit their website for more information.
